The Bessemer Municipal Airport (EKY) has been reclassified as a National Airport by the FAA, a significant upgrade that recognizes its importance in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). This designation, shared by only 122 general aviation airports nationwide, will allow EKY to handle more air traffic and larger aircraft, boosting its economic impact. City officials and the Airport Authority Board see this as a "monumental step forward" that will attract more aircraft, increase flights and open new opportunities for economic growth in Bessemer, the Birmingham metro area and Central Alabama.
The reclassification also brings additional federal funding, making EKY a more attractive travel hub. The FAA's decision was based on EKY's safety record, aircraft numbers, usage history and growth potential. Read more at EKY National Airport Press Release 1.01.
