2019 left the Birmingham region with much to celebrate.
By the numbers, it was a successful year: The Birmingham Business Alliance tracked projects that announced more than 1,100 jobs and $492 million in capital investment, and the region reaching and then surpassing its pre-recession height of employment.
Some of the projects that set 2019 apart:
U.S. Steel announced it will add around 150 full-time employees and invest $215 million to restart construction on a technologically advanced electric arc furnace steelmaking facility in the Fairfield community of Birmingham.
McLeod Software opened its national headquarters in Hoover, an investment of approximately $21 million.
DC BLOX opened its Birmingham data center, an investment of $785 million over the next decade.
Ground was broken on Grand River Technology Park, a regional hub for research and development, tourism and light manufacturing that could add more than 1,200 jobs and have an economic impact of about $85 million on the Birmingham region.
Carvana announced plans to invest more than $40 million to construct an Alabama distribution and fulfillment center, creating more than 450 jobs in Bessemer.
Samuel Associated Tube Group announced plans to invest $29 million to build a new manufacturing facility in Jefferson County.
The National Cement Co. of Alabama announced plans to invest upwards of $250 million to construct a new kiln at its Ragland production plant, the largest single investment in St. Clair County in over 20 years.
