Birmingham residents may not be aware that one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of coconut products is located right in their backyard.

Marx Brothers Inc., which next year will celebrate its centennial as a company, manufactures and distributes sweetened, desiccated and toasted coconut products to consumers in the grocery, food service, ingredient and bakery supply markets all over the country.

The family-owned company is located in downtown Birmingham and in 2016 completed a $2.6 million warehouse expansion that provided an additional 40,000 square feet to house raw materials and finished goods, as well as space for new equipment and additional production lines, landing it on the Birmingham Business Alliance’s New and Expanding Industry List.

Marx Brothers has been increasingly interested in sustainability efforts, including the installation of a 132-kilowatt solar photovoltaic energy system on the roof of its facility.

This year, the company launched a new sustainability initiative that included the installation of a 132-kilowatt solar photovoltaic energy system on the roof of its facility to increase efficiency and decrease waste. The company is fully committed to sustainability efforts, said Edgar Marx, president of Marx Brothers.

“It’s our goal to produce sustainably sourced organic coconut products while reducing our own carbon footprint and positively impacting the environment in which we live and work,” he said. “We hope that our many investments in sustainability initiatives continue to demonstrate our commitment both to the environment and to our customers nationwide.”

Marx Brothers is the expert on all things coconut, producing coconut flour, oil, sugar and chips. The company is constantly innovating, including offering an organic line of coconut in addition to its traditional fare. Its innovation and obsession with quality is how it has made it to the 99-year mark, Marx said.

The company is the only family-owned coconut food processor in the country.

Mark Brown, the BBA’s Vice President of Business Retention and Expansion, said the company is an integral part of the Birmingham business community.

“Marx Brothers continues to be an anchor in the community,” said Brown, who worked with the company on its expansion. “That Birmingham is home to the only family-owned coconut food processor in the country is unique and adds value to our city. Its innovation is helping them with production and efficiency to continue to be competitive in the industry.”
