Amazon starts hiring process in Bessemer ahead of spring opening

Amazon’s $325 million Bessemer fulfillment center is slated for a late March opening, according to Bessemer Mayor Kenneth Gulley.

Gulley, speaking at Tuesday’s Bessemer City Council meeting and reported on by CBS 42, said that Amazon representatives were looking at an end of March opening for the fulfillment center, and that within the next eight weeks the online retail giant would begin hiring for many of the 1,500 jobs anticipated to come from the project.

Innovate Birmingham’s ninth cohort of students recently completed bootcamps in data analytics and software development. Created to help fill the tech talent gap that exists in the Birmingham region – where there are more tech jobs available than individuals with the skills necessary to fill those roles – 140 graduates have attained work as a result of the bootcamps, said Haley Medved Kendrick, Ph.D., director of Innovate Birmingham.
